All Black History Month I will be highlighting Black Owned Businesses and Black Fashion Designers. Check out the first week of designers and businesses HERE. This project has been a labor of love and I’m so happy how well it’s been received on Instagram. Make sure you’re following me on instagram to that you don’t miss a post or a new business to follow! Yes, it would be amazing for you to support these businesses and designers in the form of buying from them. But something as small as a follow on Instagram or Facebook or attending an event is still a form of support. You all have supported me throughout my years of blogging simply by visiting this space. So I encourage you all to share this article with your friends, visit these establishments and consider buying Black and helping to support small business and Black talent. I am also super grateful for all the people who came on board when I pitched this idea.

Byron Lars is a well known fashion industry veteran who started his own label in 1991 with the a twist on the classic white shirt. I was lucky enough to be invited into his Atelier this month for a pull. He was there and we chatted for a good 30 minutes about everything; the state of the music industry (his Atelier is filled with CD’s), dressing women’s bodies, fabrics, the state of America and more. He is brilliant when it comes to designing and I especially love his sheath dresses. He is so humble and funny and talented and I’m amazed that he came on board for this project. When I think about the fashion scene here in New York City, Fe Noel always comes to mind. She launched her brand in 2015 and it’s heavily influenced by her Grenadian heritage and her love for travel. Her designs are innovative and bold and the brands philosophy is to Eat Well, Travel Often and Dress to Inspire. I got to spend about an hour with Undra, talking about her business and the in’s and out’s of being a fashion designer. She is taking the step soon to be fulltime in her business and to fully pursue her dreams. It’s a brave thing to do. It’s a thing not a lot of people are willing to do. Many people love comfort and will always settle for steadiness instead of taking a leap of faith and following their passions. Undra started her label in 2015 with 6 principles: Fashion, Dance, Persistence, Friendship, Timelessness and LOVE. Her designs are fun, modern and bold.
