I am the table

So, I interviewed for a new job a few weeks ago. I had absolutely no intention on leaving my current place of employment unless I was getting paid buckets more money to work less. And well that’s what this new company was supposedly offering. So I thought I’d brush up on my interview skills. I had nothing to lose. I have a solid job with the next to the highest title. If I didn’t get this one, I wouldn’t feel any kinda way. But I still got those jitters. I still brushed up on some old stuff I hadn’t thought about since graduate school. I dusted off my resume and I put on a blazer. The interview was an interview. I was fresh meat and this guy wanted me to work for his company. Then the question came;

Him: So what would you say you bring to the table?
Me: *Looks him dead in the eye* I am the table.

Yes, I finally got to use that line in a real life situation and he ate it up! They wanted to hire me, but alas they actually weren’t offering me buckets more money to work less. But atleast I know, I still got it.

GET THE LOOK

I spent this past weekend packing for Morocco and interviewing major women who are inspiring and kicking ass in creative fields for Fashion Steele NYC 2017 Magazine. It’s hitting the web, as always, on January 1st. If you haven’t had a chance to check out past issues, go get your entire life HERE. A resounding issue that kept coming up during the interviews was how hard it is for creatives to create in corporate environments. That’s something I’ll never fully understand being that my 9-5 as a Physical Therapist and Director of Physical Therapy never cross paths with my 12am-11:59pm which is Fashion Steele NYC. I keep the two very separate and for good reasons: 1). I don’t need my patients googling me 2). I was discouraged by my very first boss who knew all about Fashion Steele NYC that there was no place for extra curricular activities when you have a doctorate degree (thank goodness I got the hell outta there).

A wise woman once told me that a good boss should want their employees to be multifaceted. What millennial do you know that only does one thing? I’ll wait. Nonetheless, I know the fear of leaving something so familiar and definite i.e. a steady paycheck to follow your dreams. Even when one has all the knowledge and every tool to succeed freelance, there’s always a little voice that can grow and drown you in doubt. But interviewing these amazing women just confirmed that living your dreams is possible.

Today, I was an Editor and it felt damn good. Baby steps. Next stop….Morocco, make sure you follow along on Instagram and Youtube (I’m gonna attempt to vlog!).

    “I am the table”, gotta use that. In the workforce one should never get too comfortable. Keep that resume updated, apply for jobs every now and then, and go on an interview or two even if you don’t need the job. I find that when you interview and already have a job you like, you are more confident and more likely to get an offer.
    Enjoy your trip!
